Satan loves his music (and yours too).

The second article in this series will deal with the second being (God being the first) that might have had a lot to do with music on the celestial level; Satan himself. For those of you who do not believe that there was an angel named Lucifer that was kicked out of heaven due to his pride and stupidity, please investigate that phenomenon first in order to come to a logical conclusion before joining this exploration.  This series is intended for those who believe in the essentials of Christianity, one being that there is indeed a devil amongst us.  We are going to explore what this entity’s role might be or have been with the art form we call music.

Most Christians know that Lucifer was an angel that chose to challenge God and was therefore thrown out of heaven into the netherworld to rule for a period of time. However, Satan was not just any ol’ angel, but rather one of God’s most special creations.  He was beautiful, smart, and very talented. He was so smart, beautiful and talented that he got the idea he was just as good (if not better) than God himself. If it sounds like the plot of a good movie or book, it’s no wonder because most prose and the ideas for them have their roots in Biblical themes. The greatest stories ever told, if you will.

The Biblical description of Satan in Ezekiel 28:12-14: “You were the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering: The sardius, topaz, and diamond, Beryl, onyx, and jasper, Sapphire, turquoise,  and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes  Was prepared for you on the day you were created. You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.” And then Isiah 14: 12-14 talks about his fall: “”How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation  On the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’”

Some interpret parts of Ezekiel to mean that Satan was the “worship leader” in heaven.  That he had actual musical instruments built into his being.  Other’s say that there is simply too little if any evidence to suggest Satan had anything to do with music.  However, whether or not Satan himself was the music or worship leader is a mute point.  We know that Satan was a wanna be “Idol” in heaven, he had a following (e.g., one third of the angels followed him out of heaven). Imagine the charisma one would need to convince angelic beings to follow you away from the very one that created you in the first place. Satan was a rock star.

Now consider  that there are many references in the Bible to God being worshiped.  Whether or not this worship was with song and singing, is debatable.  Job 38:7, Revelation 5:11-13 and Luke 2:13-14 all seem to at least suggest that the angels do sing praise to God.  Ephesians 5:19 suggests further that singing and song is encouraged if not innate for mankind as well; “speaking one to another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;” I am going to make the assumption with what appears to be Biblical support that God not only desires but encourages every being to sing praises to Him. In fact, when the Pharisees demanded that Jesus rebuke the disciples for shouting out praises to the King Jesus replied in Luke 19: 40; “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!”

Satan, whom thought he was equal to God, wanted no less than for his followers – the whole universe if he could, to shout and sing praises to him. The rocks are not going to shout and sing for Satan.  The Angels that did not follow him out of heaven are not going to sing his praises. God Himself is certainly is not going to worship His own creation.  So who is left?  Satan wants to be worshipped, in fact he demands it. Why else would Jesus have said one of His most famous commands in Matthew 4:10; “Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” So who can Satan convince to willingly or inadvertently worship him? YOU. Mankind. Who else is left  to do his bidding?  If you won’t give him your praise outright, he will make sure you participate with those who do.  2 Corinthians 11:14 states “And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” And Revelation 13:8 states “And all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain.”

Therefore, if Satan demands worship and only humans are left to do it, how, when, and where are they doing it? People are giving praise to Satan everywhere, all the time, and through whatever means are available. What bigger platform could there be than from the stage of entertainment?  Name another, if you can. In this present age what medium has the capacity to reach the most people in the most seemingly innocuous ways possible.  Only one, the media. Through television, movies, books, news, and of course perhaps the most pervasive of all – music. So whether or not you care to see the worship of Satan through music or choose to remain ignorant, or put off dealing with it until later; the point is that you are participating in one way or another in the worshiping of Satan. You don’t even need to pick a side.  If you are not with Christ (through ignorance, an educated choice, ambivalence, etc.), you are against him.

Here are a few  lines from a song of one of the most popular rock groups in the last few years; this was my favorite rock band until I started reading their lyrics, “Pray to your god, open your heart . Whatever you do, don’t be afraid of the dark. Cover your eyes, the devil’s inside. Blessed by a bitch from a bastard seed. Pleasure to meet you but be prepared to bleed . Rise, I will rise, I will rise. Skinned her alive, ripped her apart. Scattered her ashes, buried her heart. Rise up above it, high up above and see.” – 30 Seconds to Mars, Night of the Hunter. (Gold record over 3 million sold worldwide)

“Some people say my love cannot be true. Please believe me, my love, and I’ll show you I will give you those things you thought unreal . . .your love for me has just got to be real . . .Look into my eyes, you will see who I am. my name is Lucifer, please take my hand!” – Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath, Nativity In Black (N.I.B.)

“I’m on a cross Lucifer please cut me free (cut me free). I’ll draw your portrait if you pull these nails out my feet (nails out my feet). My cross turns upside down. No Lord could stop us now cause the demons reborn again. Follow me into the trees. Watch me rob Adam and watch me rape Eve” Rap group Three 6 Mafia (5 albums in the top ten and an Academy Award).

I could list damning lyrics from far more popular entertainers than those above and many from bands and singers you have never heard of, but one’s your children and your brothers and sisters readily and happily consume. The point of this article is not to condemn the believer for listening to satanic music but rather this information is intended to help steer you to better choices.  Be aware of what you are consuming, supporting, and distributing to others. Pray about God’s will in all that you do and participate in.  Consider if merely listening to music you may or may not know is praising evil can influence you. Consider if the God you love is happy that you are either passively or actively engaging with people who hate the light and love the dark. What have I done since discovering how pervasive this type of music is?  I change the radio station.  I listen and pay attention to the lyrics. I put on music that is positive to the truth and love of all that is good rather than that which loves evil.

Jesus said in John 10:10 that the devil is a thief who comes to kill and steal and destroy. Ephesians 6:12 states; “We wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers, against the world rulers of this darkness, the spiritual host of wickedness in heavenly places.” Whether you know it or not, Satan uses the media to do his bidding. He wants to be worshiped and he gets what he wants.  If you don’t choose God you automatically choose the opposite. There are only two choices. In 2 Timothy 4:7 Paul says; “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful.”  Make no mistake, being a Christian is not easy. It is a daily battle of choices and actions.  Add the media and specifically music to that daily battle. Make wiser choices in music.  Take a stand for good.  Turn the radio off or to another song when an offensive song comes on about casual sex, violence, idol worship of money and fame, etc., etc., etc.. Don’t buy CD’s or go to concerts of people who use your hard earned money to support darkness. Start making active choices and quit being passive about the music that infiltrates your ears and your mind. Start today.

Because 30 Seconds to Mars was until a few days ago my favorite band, I want to do a little exposé on them in my next musing. And I also want to follow up with bands and singers  that you may never have known worship Satan.  You will be surprised and you may even doubt the conclusions, but all I ask is that you have an open mind and heart to at least look at the evidence. Until then, peace and love, in Christ.
